First Lesson
Firstly, you will need to choose a club near to you. Please see our club locations page. You are welcome to watch any classes before starting. There is no need to reserve or book a place as we have beginner classes running continuously. Just turn up and give it a try.
On your 1st lesson you will need to arrive about 10 minutes before the class starts. The main club instructor will need your name and a contact number and will give you a welcome letter. You will need to wear loose sports type clothing and will be training in bare feet.
The whole club does a warm up together and then split down into groups i.e. beginner adults, beginner children, coloured belts and brown/black belts (varies for each location). Each group will have its own black belt instructor.
Lesson Fees
Lesson fee: £3.50 Kids £4.50 Adults £10.00 Family rate (2 adults 2 children max)
1st Few Months
In your first few months of training you will learn the basic punching, blocking and kicking techniques of Karate. Please note that Tokon Kai teaches non contact karate. You will also learn basic self defence. Occasionally kick and punch bags are used to focus power and channel aggression.
To begin with, training once a week is acceptable (especially for younger children). However, twice a week is recommended.
Membership/License & Karate Suits (Gi)
As you will be aware starting out in any sport is the most expensive time. At Tokon Kai Karate, we want to encourage students to continue to train in Karate so we have kept costs to a minimum. You can train for approximately five lessons before you will need to purchase the following items to enable you to grade through the karate belt system:
o Karate Suit-embroidered with the club badge £15-£25 (depending on size)
o Membership/licence £15 (one combined annual payment)
Please ask for a form when you feel ready, however there will be no pressure.
Your 1st Belt
Once you have your membership/licence you will receive an attendance stamp card and a licence book. Once you have completed 18 lessons and your instructor agrees you have reached the required standard you will be awarded your 1st belt.
All subsequent belts vary in requirement (see gradings page) and you have to take an official grading (exam)
