Tokon Kai Karate has been established and run by full time professionally qualified instructors for over 14 years in South East Essex. Classes are available 7 days a week across 12 different locations.

Tokon Kai Karate teaches the traditional style of Shotokan Karate and self defence. The lessons are run in a friendly atmosphere and family participation is encouraged, whilst the discipline of the traditional martial art is observed.
Karate can help improve self confidence, fitness, mental discipline, motivation and concentration.

Chief Instructor is Sensei Steve Roberts - 5th Dan who has been teaching and training continuously for over 30 years in Shotokan Karate. Sensei Roberts has won 4 World Championship titles in both kata (forms) and Kumite (fighting). Assistant Chief Instructor is Sensei Jo Griffiths-3rd Dan. Both are fully qualified, licenced and insured instructors. They have first aid qualifications and are CRB checked. Tokon Kai has a child protection policy.

As a supplement to the karate training, kick and punch bags are used to channel aggression and focus power. Weapons are taught at specific lessons and weapons courses are held with guest instructors.

Karate is now officially recognised on the syllabus for GCSE and A level physical education, of which some students have gone on to successfully pass.

Tokon Kai hosts a course each year with Shihan Funakoshi-9th Dan who is one of the highest Shotokan masters in the world today.

Tokon Kai holds interclub and invitational competitions, as well as having a squad of students who compete at National and International level.

Social events are held throughout the year, Easter, summer and Christmas to build unity between the different club locations.
